What is relevant is that the metric is only based on the most repeatable or predictive stats.<br /><br />So when you see a team ranked much higher than their win loss record suggests, it must mean they are losing because of non-predictive stats which are not included in the metric.<br /><br />I think special teams is probably part of the explanation. Red zone performance, fumble recovery luck, 4th quarter defensive collapses, 3rd down conversions, general high leverage situation failures and on and on... there are many things that could be at play here.<br /><br />However, I think people are really overreacting here just because one team seems to be so off. About 85% of the teams that are supposed to win do win in my meteric and most of the losses come from games that should be decided by 3 pts or less.<br /><br />Their loss is likely a combination of coaching and pure luck. <br /><br />With all that said, I think one of the reasons Carolina is so highly rated here is because of opponent adjustments.<br /><br />Let me explain, and by the way I've followed stuff like this for 30 years in the NFL. <br /><br />Teams don't play at their averages game after game, sometimes they play at extreme high levels and when this happens of coares that team builds-up huge effeciency stats in those games and makes the team look better than they are, because this is not maintanable to continue at this extreme high level of play "a regression to the mean" happens to the team.<br /><br />There are things you can look for that point to when "a regression to the mean" is coming, sometimes I can be off by 1 week, but rarely will I be off by more.<br /><br />Carolina has played a number of opponents this season that were ready for "a regression to the mean". In other words, a team that was coming off extreme levels of play and had built-up their effeciency stats to high levels so Carolina recieved alot of credit for opponent adjustments and Carolina played those teams well because those teams had "a regression to the mean" in the Carolina game. <br /><br />This happened in the Tampa game where Tamps was due for " a regression to the mean" and it did happen but Tampa was very forunate to pull that game out.<br /><br />Carolina also play Atlanta earlier in the year in a similar situation where they almost won against a team coming off a number of strong games.<br /><br />An example of this happening this weekend is Seattle VS Miami. Seattle comes in off an extreme level of play that is simply not maintainable and Miami is coming in off a extreme low level of play that is not likely to continue.<br /><br />"A regression to the mean" will likely happen and Miami would be the right play against the spread at +3.5 and will in all likely-hood win straight up and many will be sssooooo surprised by this. <br /><br />If you look at the probabilities, the model has Seattle at 61%, because Seattle is coming off extreme levels of play and has built-up their effeciency stats in the process, what the model does not know is that Seattles extreme level of play is not maintainable.<br /><br />Like I said, I could be off by 1 week, but probally not.<br /><br />When you add it all-up, TEAMS DO NOT PLAY AT THEIR AVERAGES EACH WEEK, sometimes they play well above and that almost certainly means they will play below at some point soon.<br /><br />And this is one reason why a model can not achieve a very high rate of succes.Mike M.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38600807.post-32733236260265562752012-11-22T04:38:33.315-05:002012-11-22T04:38:33.315-05:00Did anyone actually see the TB-Carolina game sunda...Did anyone actually see the TB-Carolina game sunday? And I tend to agree with the comment made by one user that the answer that it's "embedded in the metrics" is insufficient--though probably partially true. I wish I had both the time (and the skills) to try the test the following metric, but I'll offer it up and perhaps it will inspire some thought (and improvement on the base idea) on a way to include "coaching" in the model.<br /><br />My thought on a possible coaching metric would be looking at play by play data, and calculating some kind of score (using either WPA or EPA) based on the variation resulting from "optimal" play selection versus "actual" play selection. So for instance, it's been said that teams should pass more on first and second down, and run more on third down. So let me use real names to demonstrate. Let's say on 1st and 10 from the 20, midway through a close game in the third quarter, Mike Smith's Falcons throw the football. Presuming that a pass from 1st and 10 from the 20 in this situation is "more optimal" than a run from 1st and 10 from the 20 in this situation, Mike Smith receives a EPA and/or WPA score that is the variance between the EXPECTED outcomes of a pass versus a run. The ACTUAL outcome is irrelevant for Mike Smith's score. Now let's say that pass goes for 8 yards and they are facing 2nd and 2 from the 28. We do the same thing on the "optimal" play call for the next play. Let's say it "should" be a run (I have no idea--in fact, I imagine they should still pass--just using as an example). And let's say they pass and pick up 10 more yards. Well if the "optimal" play "should" have been a run, then the variance between the expected EP/WPA of run v. pass would be negative, and Smith would get a reduction in WPA/EP. Essentially, it's not too different from the 4th down "go for it" calculations that we see every week posted on this site (particularly when coaches fail to go for it when they "should"). We can calculate how much expected WPA or EPA is different between the "optimal" choice and the actual choice. The actual result is irrelevant.<br /><br />In as much that coaches tend to be non-optimal in the NFL (as evidenced by this site's analysis), I would expect most coaching EPAs and WPAs to be negative. But maybe "less negative" is better than "really negative". And maybe Ron Rivera (who's made some rather dubious 4th down decisions) would have one of the REALLY negative WPAs and EPAs.<br /><br />We could use league baselines or team baselines to determine "optimal" choice (though I'm guessing team baselines would have much more limited data and reduce any potential significance--but maybe not). Perhaps we limit it to "high leverage" situations only (end of half, end of game, OT), similar to how the model limits baseline calculations to "normal" situations. Limiting to high leverage situations probably is better given it's those situations where coaching decisions probably have the greatest impact.<br /><br />I'm aware there are plenty of deficiencies. The fact Peyton Manning pretty much calls the plays would make it seem unfair to punish/reward John Fox for play call decisions. But it may serve as a starting point at least. And if we limited measurement of the coaching metric to high leverage situations only, I would argue Fox has a larger role (though not too vociferously).<br /><br />Just an idea. I'm sure I've overlooked deficiencies that may be obvious to some that would invalidate this approach as being meaningful.
